In our two-weekend workshop, we guide participants into the folk embroidery culture of Zala, with particular emphasis on the rich world of motifs and techniques of Hetés embroidery.

In the first weekend, we begin with theoretical and practical foundations. We survey the characteristic groups of Zala embroideries, including white embroideries and embroidery traditions tied to various settlements.  We pay special attention to Hetés embroidery, its characteristic motif repertoire, colour palette, material use, and technical features. We study in detail one of the characteristic decorative elements of Hetés long towels, the subrika pattern repertoire and its composition.

In the second weekend, we build on the knowledge acquired, and independent design and creative experimentation take on an increasingly prominent role.

We explore the fundamentals of designing and composing larger-scale patterns, while continuing to draw from the motif and form vocabulary of Hetés embroidery. We playfully experiment with colours, forms, rhythms, and motif combinations, and we also examine how a traditional pattern repertoire can be transformed while preserving its character and spirit.
